Juneteenth (the abbreviation for “June Nineteenth”) commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and enforce emancipation. This occurred two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared enslaved people in Confederate-held territory to be free.
Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and is regarded as the longest-running African American holiday.
