Moby Donates Coachella Profits to Animal Rights Organizations

    May 14, 2026

Electronic musician and longtime animal rights activist Moby announced last month that he would donate 100% of the profits from his 2026 Coachella performances to four animal advocacy organizations. According to media reports, the concerts marked Moby’s first Coachella appearances in more than a decade and were intended not only as performances, but also as a platform to direct attention and financial support toward organizations involved in animal welfare, vegan advocacy, and anti-animal testing campaigns.

The beneficiary organizations are:

CharityWatch reached out to Moby’s management team on May 13th, 2026 and asked how much was raised for these organizations and when the funds were transferred to them. As of the publication date of this article on May 14th, 2026, Moby’s team has not yet provided this information.

For donors interested in supporting animal-related charities, celebrity support alone should not be relied upon to make giving decisions. CharityWatch encourages donors to evaluate charities based not only on mission, but also on transparency, governance, and financial efficiency.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM)

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) describes its mission as promoting preventive medicine, encouraging higher standards in research, and advocating for alternatives to animal testing and experimentation. The organization is also known for promoting plant-based diets and nutrition-based approaches to disease prevention.

PCRM is Top-Rated by CharityWatch and currently receives a “B+” rating on our “A+” to “F” rating scale based on our analysis of its fiscal 2025 consolidated audited financial statements and IRS tax Forms 990. We found that the charity spent 77% of its cash budget on programs that year, with the remaining 23% being spent on overhead; and that it spent $21 to raise each $100 in cash donations.

CharityWatch’s rating of PCRM also includes the financial activities of PCRM’s wholly owned and controlled subsidiaries, The PCRM Foundation and PCRM Clinic d/b/a the Barnard Medical Center, the accounts of which are consolidated in the PCRM audited financial statements for the fiscal year ended July 31, 2025. All intercompany balances and transactions were eliminated in the audit consolidation. PCRM, The PCRM Foundation, and PCRM Clinic are each 501(c)(3) public charity organizations.

Mercy For Animals

Mercy For Animals states that its mission is to end industrial animal agriculture and build what it describes as a more just and sustainable food system. The organization conducts investigations, corporate campaigns, public education efforts, and advocacy related to factory farming and food systems.

Mercy For Animals currently receives a “B+” rating on CharityWatch’s “A+” to “F” rating scale based on our analysis of its 2024 consolidated audited financial statements and IRS tax Form 990. We found that the charity spent 72% of its cash budget on programs in 2024, with the remaining 28% being spent on overhead; and that it spent $16 to raise each $100 in cash donations that year.

While a financially efficient organization, Mercy For Animals currently does not qualify for Top-Rated status due to failing one of CharityWatch’s governance benchmarks which requires a nonprofit to maintain a board of directors consisting of at least 5 individuals, with a majority being independent. According to Mercy For Animal’s 2024 IRS Form 990 (Part VI, Section A, lines 1a & 1b), the charity’s board consists of only 4 individuals.

According to the Mercy For Animals audit of December 31, 2024 (Note 7, Concentrations): “During the year ended December 31, 2024, 3 donors accounted for approximately 65% of contributions and grant revenues…”

The Humane League

The Humane League focuses primarily on reducing the suffering of farm animals through corporate policy campaigns, public education, and advocacy efforts related to industrial farming practices.

The Humane League currently receives a “B+” rating on CharityWatch’s “A+” to “F” rating scale based on our analysis of its 2024 audited financial statements and IRS tax Form 990. We found that the charity spent 66% of its cash budget on programs in 2024, with the remaining 34% being spent on overhead; and that it spent $9 to raise each $100 in cash donations that year.

While a reasonably financially efficient organization, The Humane League currently does not qualify for Top-Rated status due to failing one of CharityWatch’s governance benchmarks. In its 2024 tax filing the charity reported having a written conflict of interest policy, but responded “No” to the question asking if its officers, directors, trustees and key employees were required to annually disclose interests that could give rise to conflicts (IRS Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12b). “

According to The Humane League audit of December 31, 2024 (Note 7, Related Parties):

“The Humane League UK (THL-UK) is an international charity organization incorporated under local regulations. While THL-UK and the Organization share a common mission and collaborate in support of the Organization’s programs, but there [sic] is no controlling financial interest between the organizations. During the year ended December 31, 2024, the Organization provided THL-UK [a] grant in the amount of $1,300,000.”

Direct Action Everywhere (DxE)

Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) is an animal rights network known for activism campaigns, protests, undercover investigations, and direct-action demonstrations focused on industrial animal agriculture.

CharityWatch does not currently rate Direct Action Everywhere due to its small size. This does not imply either a positive or negative assessment. Donors considering support for any organization not currently rated by CharityWatch may wish to review the charity’s audited financial statements, IRS Form 990 filings, governance structure, and transparency practices before donating.

Celebrity Support Can Drive Attention, But Donors Should Still Research Charities

Celebrity support can bring significant public attention to charitable causes and may encourage new donors to become engaged with issues such as animal welfare and industrial farming practices. However, CharityWatch encourages donors to look beyond promotional messaging and independently evaluate how charities operate.

CharityWatch’s nonprofit profile pages provide donors with independently analyzed information designed to help them make more informed giving decisions. In addition to overall letter grades, CharityWatch reports key financial efficiency metrics such as the percentage of expenses spent on programs and the organization’s cost to raise $100 in public support. Most profiles also include information about executive compensation, governance and transparency practices, privacy policies, audited financial statements, significant related-party transactions, and other relevant information of interest to donors. Many profiles also contain analysts’ notes that provide additional context regarding unusual accounting practices, litigation, organizational structure, fundraising methods, or other matters CharityWatch believes donors should understand before contributing.

For nonprofits that CharityWatch does not rate, donors should consider reviewing audited financial statements, IRS tax filings, executive compensation practices, fundraising costs, governance standards, and overall transparency before making contributions. Even when a charity is endorsed by a celebrity or tied to a high-profile fundraising event, informed giving remains essential.

Will you help CharityWatch continue our important work?

As the only independent charity watchdog organization in the United States, CharityWatch relies on your support to fund our in-depth research and analysis in order to bring you the unbiased charity ratings and other information you rely on to help you make more informed giving decisions. We are not directly or indirectly funded by nonprofit industry interests.

We hope you will consider making a donation today so that we can continue to speak openly and critically and call out wrongdoing when we see it without concern for special interests cutting our funding.
