Memorial Day
is an American holiday that is observed the last Monday of each May. The holiday honors the men and women who died
while serving in the U.S. military. In 1971 the U.S. government declared
Memorial Day a federal holiday.
Many Americans
observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials and holding parades
and festive gatherings. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer
